O'Meeghan Surname Definition:

Woulfe suggests that Meegan (Ó Miadhagáin) is a variant form of Meehan (Ó Miadhacháin) which was dealt with in Irish Families (pp. 224,225)* Although at first sight this would seem improbable, since Meegan is now found almost exclusively in Co.

O'Meeghan Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Monaghan and the Oriel country whereas Meehan belongs (apart from Dublin) rather to Munster, Connacht and Donegal. Nevertheless I think Woulfe is right: not only because we have the evidence of local registrars that Meehan and Meegan have been used synonymously in Co. Monaghan, but earlier records corroborate their identity: for example in the Tipperary hearth money rolls of l665-7 there are 8 families of Meehan and as many as 29 of Meegan; similarly the 1659 “census” places several anglicized variants of Ó Miadhachain in Co. Clare and Co. Tipperary and also four families of O'Meehan in Co. Fermanagh, while in the Monaghan hearth money rolls (1663-5) there are a number of entries for O'Meeghan, O'Mighan as well as O'Migan.

*It was there stated that two O'Meehans were bishops of Achonry, the authority for which was Analecta Hibemica vi, 287,297; but the recently published British Handbook of Chronology corrects this, the name of the first being O'Maicin not O'Miachain.
